Taiwan Island Trip: Part II

On Day 8, Brother Chen came again to pick us up to Brother Ge Guanping’s house in the morning. After treating us to dumplings and fruit, Brother Hu Rang, his neighbor, came over. We talked, took group pictures, and took a tour of the backyard orchard and the other four houses. They had built and planned their five houses to be built together.
Brother Chen took us to the Shou Feng train station. We rode the train to Pingtung, where Li-Fang’s classmate, Li Guiyun, picked us up to her house. On Day 9, Li-Fang's friend took us to tour the Six Tribe Hakka Cultural Center.
After lunch, she drove us to the Pingtung train station. We rode the train to the Tainan. After checking in at our AirBnb, we rode a taxi to visit Li-Fang’s aunt and her second cousin, Zheng Xiang. On Day 10, we met with our friend, Jobie Li. She drove us to Li-Fang’s dad’s columbarium to see his urn. We also went to the Tainan Confucius Temple and ate a very busy mall food court.
Then she dropped us off at the Anping Castle, where we climbed the watch tower and lingered in the museum.
Li-Fang’s friend, Chen Huijuan, came and treated us to Oyster omelettes. Her daughter and grandson joined us. Then we went shopping at small shops in an alley.
She drove us to Li-Fang's aunt’s house, so we could take group photos.
Then we went to eat ice in another part of Tainan at a very popular shop. Her son, James, and his wife and daughter joined us.
Their whole family walked with us all the way to the front door of our Airbnb. On Day 11, we visited Chi Kan Lou right after breakfast.
Li-Fang's classmate, picked us up to go to Hsinying. The reunion lunch for Li-Fang and her classmates took place at a nice restaurant. After lunch, the classmates took a leisurely stroll through their old high school.
We then rode the bus to the Iansui Mortuary or Columbarium to see my father's urn.
Then we returned to Hsingying and browsed some shops before going to the night market.
On Day 12, we first attended church at the Yongkang Chapel to meet Megan's friends, the Liu family. Megan shared her testimony in the testimony meeting.
Then her friend drove us to the Tainan train station. Upon arriving at the Taichung train station, my aunt was there to welcome us. My uncle drove us to a buffet restaurant in Taichung for dinner. There we met their 2 sons, their wives, and 4 grandchildren.
Brother and Sister Lin picked us up and drove us to the Bagua Mountain. No national or local park would be open this late, but the Bagua Mountain Skywalk is open 24/7. There were still people there at night. We walked around and saw a magnificent view of the city at night, the Buddhist writings, and the humongous statue of Buddha. On Day 13, they drove us to Lu Gang Old Street with its narrow alley, old Qing dynasty homes, and many small shop.
They then drove us to the Changhua train station. At the Taoyuan train station, Megan's high school friend's mom picked us. Upon entering her car, she unexpectedly announced that she just contracted COVID last week. Not feeling comfortable to stay at her house overnight under these precarious circumstances, we politely thanked her and stepped out of her car. We found a taxi to Li-Fang's classmate’s house. They treated us to a nice dinner at a Japanese restaurant. After more chatting, her friends drove us to the Taoyuan Airport at midnight.
On Day 14, we stayed up all night at the airport so that we could check into EVA Airlines at 4:30am. Our trip back to the Incheon Airport and then to San Francisco went smoothly.
We were greeted by my brother, who took us back to his house. We then drove to Reno, NV, for the evening. The next day, we arrived in Utah and stayed overnight. We drove back to Maryland and made it home by Saturday evening.

Christmas in Utah

This Christmas we decided to fly Breeze Airlines from Dulles Airport to Provo, UT.  And it was a breeze.  We were able to see Grace performance her dance.  Afterwards, she and her siblings had a photo op with Santa. We also were able to attend Sofia's Christmas concert at school.  Can you see Sofia? Our long-awaited family group photo at the Utah State Capitol turned out beautifully despite the cold.  Thanks, Veronica, for taking the photos. We are grateful for the time we had to spend time with our family during Christmas and New Years Eve.

Happy Holidays 2024

2024 was Ben's first full year of retirement from full-time federal government service. However, he decided to continue teaching engineering classes part-time at the local Montgomery College and fulfilled a dream this fall in teaching a math class. He picked up pickle ball, worked on family history, and started other projects. This year Li-Fang served as a counselor in the Relief Society Presidency at church and coordinated almost weekly activities for the women. Among these were rehearsals for line dance, social dance, and Latin dance. She is still having fun teaching private piano to more than a dozen students and art and sewing at VisArts. In the summer, we visited our children in Utah and returned to Taiwan. We are grateful for life and its many beautiful blessings.   Merry Christmas from the Lin's! Life is good; kids are growing… In January, Trey is going to Primary and Blake will be going to Young Men's! Grace is still everyone’s frie...

Happy Holidays 2025

What an amazing year 2025 was for our family! Our list of adventures included a family reunion with my brothers in Chicago, a relaxing trip to Williamsburg and Virginia Beach with Jessica and Joshua, and a Church history tour of Palmyra and Kirtland with church friends. It was our first year of enjoying our first hybrid car. Having to add gas only once a month has simplified life and made it all worthwhile. We share our gratitude of these many blessings and hope that you, the reader, will have received lots of blessings as well this past year and many more in the coming year. This year, Ben has taught half-time at the local Montgomery College. He is serving as the mission leader at church to help new converts with the aid of the full-time missionaries. Li-Fang is enjoying herself by teaching oil painting and sewing at VisArts in Rockville and still continues to teach private piano. She is serving in the Relief Society, the women's organization in our church. Be...
